HUGE RESPECT

I'm now safe in my apt with space heater on and with a cold/flu - no doubt from being out on the streets of cold Vancouver collecting audio of the 'sounds' of this place now known as Vancouver. I will try to be back on the streets on Monday and have met and collected audio and good conversations from many more than these, but its great that you're all willing to share of yourselves - go to www.flickr.com/ndnsneakup for names...
I'm not a blogger at all and running a bit of a fever, so am attempting to upload some of the photos from people who I've come across and commissioned/solicited to contribute site audio to my project "nikamon ohci askiy (songs because of the land) aka www.vancouversonglines.ca
Stay warm y'all - I have untold respect for your ability to keep on keeping on and endure the frigid weather here!

Gratitude

HUGE thanks to Glenn Alteen and all the Grunt Gallery staff, board members and supporters for inviting me to make this project. Also, the website and various social networking sites simply would not be in place without the expertise, vision and dedication of Sandra Dametto (interactive producer), Danyul Carmichael (programmer) and Myron Campbell (designer - on behalf of Switch Interactive).
Also grateful for this land and her inhabitants who keep inspiring me - please keep checking back on the interactive site for new uploads: www.vancouversonglines.ca - and sign up if you've got some ambient city audio to contribute.

What it is

From December 7, 2008 till December 31, 2008 mixed blood (Metis/Cree/German) artist and musician Cheryl L'Hirondelle will sing through the streets of Vancouver, B.C. as part of her project Nikamon Ohci Askiy (songs because of the land).

During the month of December, the artist will make daily journeys throughout Vancouver and "sing" the landscape she encounters. These encounters will be captured by mobile phone by the artist and whatever other technologies are made available by participating viewers/audience (video, photo, audio).

During the live performances, Cheryl will sing, record and upload audio clips to an online database. Each audio clip will be tagged to one or more of the 16 cree values. The clips will automatically be available to online audiences interactively through a rich online media experience available at VancouverSonglines.ca.

This interactive experience intends to illuminate the relationship between the spirit or inspiration for the singing (the song, the audio) and the value it corresponds to within the cree worldview while engaging online audiences to interact with the content via a mashup/audio remix style interface.

Daily unscheduled live performances in Vancouver will begin November 24 and run until December 31, with the interactive website premiering December 7, 2008.

Four scheduled performances will also take place during the month of December and will be open to the public. Dates will be announced on this blog.

Please subscribe to this blog and/or the project feed at Twitter for updates.
